Ben Hillman

Channel 4 viewers were jetted off to the sunny setting of Costa Blanca, Spain on Tuesday as Ben Hillman hoped to find guests Diane and Mick their perfect home abroad. And it’s safe to say the A Place in the Sun host exceeded all expectations as the waterworks soon began when Diane and Mick set foot in property number five.

With a budget of £120, 000, Mick and Diane were looking to relocate to Spain permanently for a life in the sun with their pet two pooches and space for their family to visit.

“It’s gonna be a tricky search, ” Ben noted at the start of the journey as he admitted the pair’s budget may have to stretch. “There does have to be a compromise here”

But undeterred, Ben got to work - although he received relatively lukewarm receptions to the first four properties he had to show the two.

Property number five, however, blew everything out of the water as soon as the A Place in the Sun guests set foot outside.

The two-bedroom house with communal pool and small private pool had been on the market for nine months and had recently been reduced to a little over £150, 000.

“If you like it, don’t hesitate, ” he mentioned to the two and within moments of stepping foot through the gates, Diane admitted: “I’m stunned.”

Comforting the tearful house hunter, Ben commented: “Isn’t that true though? When you can see your family in there it really makes it work for you.”

Diane regained her composure as Ben took her and her husband inside, with the two quickly falling in love with the home’s interior as well as exterior.

Their starting bid was rejected but Ben praised the owner as he was “up-front” and “open” and said the minimum he’d accept was £145, 000.

Needless to say, Diane and Mick snapped up the counteroffer and ended up with their dream home in Spain after selling their house in the UK.Ben was on hand to help Joy and John find their home away from home as the A Place in The Sun presenter ventured to Fuengirola on Spain’s Costa del Sol. The pair had a budget of £125, 000 and had a few criteria they wanted the host to focus on when looking at properties for them, including good outside space and at least two-bedrooms. However, the search on the Channel 4 show didn’t get off to a flying start as Joy wanted to leave the first property they were shown.

The presenter thought he’d give the pair a little insight of what they could expect with their budget, lining up a two-bedroom apartment for £126, 000.

As soon as they clapped their eyes on the property, Joy and John were not impressed, with Ben having an inkling this viewing wasn’t going to go down well.

“That was instantaneous, ” he remarked, to which Joy replied: “We know on our budget we're not going to get a mansion or a palace.”

“But there is no outside space, ” she explained before Joy eventually agreed to have a look around the rest of the apartment.

The viewing went from bad to worse as when the trio walked into the kitchen, the home hunter couldn’t stand the orange colour scheme.

John actually quite liked the kitchen area, but as the viewing continued, it was clear the host was going to have to work a bit harder to help the couple find their dream home.

Next on the agenda was a two-bedroom apartment in Mijas, which seemed to be more to Joy’s liking than the previous one.

Valued at £130, 000, the presenter explained the sellers were willing to make a sale and would negotiate to bring the price down.

With an additional swimming pool and lots of open space, the pair were really impressed with the views of the Spanish countryside.

With three properties still to go, they wanted to keep their minds open to see if there was a house which could hit all their criteria.

However, as the couple looked around the property, they were displeased by the small rooms and views of other apartments and carparks.

Having completed the viewing, the pair told Ben it was a “definite no” to which the presenter hit back and asked what it was that Joy and John were looking for.

Although they loved it, they explained to the host the bedrooms were a little too small for their liking and could be the make-or-break for them.

Before moving onto property number five, they stated the apartment in Mijas was a strong contender to buy, knocking the second one out of the park.

Arriving at property number five, Ben explained it was valued at just over £125, 000 but Joy said it “wasn’t beautiful to look at”.

Again, it was that the space was too small for the pair, leading them to settle on property number four which they said they’d been “spoilt by.

By the end of the episode, the couple decided they didn’t want to purchase any of the establishments Ben had shown them and returned to the UK with a better mindset of what they wanted.as Presenter in A Place in the Sunas Presenter in A Place in the Sun: Home or Awayas Presenter in A Place in the Sun: Winter Sunas Presenter in A Place in the Sun: Summer Sun

But entering the kitchen of the first home, Ben said: [You have] a breakfast room, living space, diner - what do you reckon?

Alison commented: Wow, it's lovely. And Ben replied: Now, as you look a bit closer in the kitchen you'll notice there aren't actually any facilities there for cooking.

It was clear the pair were surprised to be looking around a potential home that offered no way of cooking, but apparently, this didn't put them off.

They enjoyed searching the rest of the house, which provided a lot of what they were looking for in terms of character.

After the kitchen, Ben moved the tour on, showing them to the bedrooms and adding: Now, we have seeping accommodation as it were sort of darting off in two directions, the master is through that way so let's start there.

The couple said the first property, which was a three-bed townhouse on the market for £58, 000, would definitely remain on the maybe list.

Ben admitted that he thought this house hunt would be more on the east side, as Ben and Allison were pleased with his first choice for them.

The couple was also fond of this home, making things harder for Ben as they repeated that it definitely wouldn't be on the no list.
